Knowing how fast people walk, or how fast a car can reasonably be driven over a particular stretch of road, and estimating a journey duration, contingency routes, etc is just completely lostĪnd on the one hand I can see well we all have phones so what's the point but on the other phones break, batteries run out, they get stolen, they lose signal, etc. That's not just navigation, but also route planning. Piece this together to form a route and make sure the connections aligned, and work out what time he needs to leave his flat to start the journey and what time he can leave the party and not have to pay for a cab home.Go to the bus station and find the bus route needed and pick up the bus timetable.Identify the nearest bus stop, since the nearest Tube stop was quite a walk away (not ideal after a skinfull!).Go to his Tube map and timetable and identify the route needed. Go to the page, then use a 4 figure grid reference to locate the street.Locate the postcode in the index to find the page number. He was given a house number and a postcode. The example one of our club members is about when he moved to London 30 years ago or whatever it was, and was invited to a house party. Not being an amazing navigator is expected, but the basic map skill now needs building up from scratch. My main hobby is mountaineering, and we have people join our club who have no idea how to read a map.
